since you've been gone less than a year, I'm guessing you were in county? County is horrible, although I've never been to Federal I've heard that it is MUCH better than County.
A big mexican took my bed mat my first night in county. then I met up with some of my uncles friends that are locked up, and they made sure I had a mat to sleep on. Having people in low places really is a good thing.

ive also heard the newer Feds are alot better. I spent 2 weeks in L.A. County, basically 3 jails...one for crips, one for bloods...and one for everyone else. didnt have any drama, but some stupid shit. they give u 2 pairs of boxers with your prison jumper. i got one pair white...and one pair pink. im like WTF ? pink? needless to say i wore one pair of underwear <white> for 2 weeks straight. When they moved me to San Diego Cnty, for 6 months, only thing i saw was some dude eat a piece of shit for 5 bux, half a joint and 4 Kools.
