THIS NOTE IS TO INFORM YOU THAT YOU ARE USING TOO MUCH BANDWIDTH ON THE
RESIDENTIAL NETWORK, IN VIOLATION OF RES COMP POLICY. This is your
first
warning. If you exceed bandwidth limits a second time, we will disable
your
In-Room Connection and issue you an educational quiz. Please read all
of
the following message to help prevent a second violation.
--> Why is this important?
Network bandwidth on the residential network is a shared resource among
residents. To ensure fair distribution of this service, we established
the
following section of the Residential Computing Acceptable Use Policy:
4. Using excessive bandwidth. For the 2003-2004 academic year,
"excessive
use" is defined as bandwidth consumption greater than 5 Gigabytes per
week in
the residence halls.

--> How does this happen?
This is probably due to a filesharing program. Even if you don't
download
much, by having a filesharing program others can upload files from your
computer, contributing to your usage. Other possible causes include
downloading large files from the world wide web, transferring files via
ftp,
or using streaming-media. Bandwidth used to or from sites on the
Berkeley
campus does not count towards your total. You can check your daily
bandwidth
usage by logging into the ResComp personalized helpdesk at the
following
website.
http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/helpdesk/--> How do I reduce my bandwidth usage?
Please visit the following web page and click on the "turn off file
sharing"
link to see how to disable filesharing programs. This is probably the
main
cause of your high usage. If after reading the following website you
are
absolutely certain that you do not use a filesharing program, then you
should
more closely monitor your other Internet activities such as web surfing
or
streaming-media usage.
http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/benice/You are currently in direct violation of the bandwidth policy for the
week of
03/08/2004. Your usage was 34.53 GB which exceeds 5 Gigabytes.
We hope you will do your part to improve network performance for all of
our
residents. In one week, we will check your usage again to ensure that
you are
compliant with the Appropriate Use Policies. If you have further
questions or
concerns regarding bandwidth, please see the following website or
contact
bandwidth@rescomp.berkeley.edu. Thank you for your cooperation.
