I pmed u a while ago about looking into these guys after you wrote your review on the show. I was hesitant to say much in response to your opinions because I hadn't seen them yet myself so I had no clue what their setlist was like or what they were playing. That is until now, and unfortunately if anything it makes you fall into a group of a people that just don't understand this band.
I went to see them in Chicago with A Perfect Circle...like you a lot of people just write the Mars Volta off as typical noise rock that means absolutely nothing and that anyone can pull off...and btw if you really do play guitar you should be thanking your lucky stars you got to witness one of if not the most incredible guitar players of this era in music.
Anyway I didn't mean to stray from my point, that being, they don't have setlists...they don't go from town to town and play the songs note for note in an effort to satisfy every person in the arena. The fact is they couldn't care less, they play to each other not the crowd. On top of that they played half of song 3 on De-Loused and all of song 7...all the quote un-quote random noise was all just the band jamming. They jammed for atleast 9/10 of the set. This, in my opinion, is what seperates them from your pop culture nu-metal screamo bullshit and gives everyone who sees a show something different from the last.
Every band that gets hyped doesn't have to suck, so don't immediately stamp a label on them and try to classify them with anything else from this generation.
that is all
