I pmed u a while ago about looking into these guys after you wrote your review on the show. I was hesitant to say much in response to your opinions because I hadn't seen them yet myself so I had no clue what their setlist was like or what they were playing. That is until now, and unfortunately if anything it makes you fall into a group of a people that just don't understand this band.
I went to see them in Chicago with A Perfect Circle...like you a lot of people just write the Mars Volta off as typical noise rock that means absolutely nothing and that anyone can pull off...and btw if you really do play guitar you should be thanking your lucky stars you got to witness one of if not the most incredible guitar players of this era in music.
Anyway I didn't mean to stray from my point, that being, they don't have setlists...they don't go from town to town and play the songs note for note in an effort to satisfy every person in the arena. The fact is they couldn't care less, they play to each other not the crowd. On top of that they played half of song 3 on De-Loused and all of song 7...all the quote un-quote random noise was all just the band jamming. They jammed for atleast 9/10 of the set. This, in my opinion, is what seperates them from your pop culture nu-metal screamo bullshit and gives everyone who sees a show something different from the last.
Every band that gets hyped doesn't have to suck, so don't immediately stamp a label on them and try to classify them with anything else from this generation.
that is all

my local radio station has been playing Mars Volta for a couple months and at first I didn't really like it, but I went to their website and listened to some more tracks and then went to kazaa and downloaded everything I could find, and now I really really like their shit
they were in Seattle like a week or two ago with APC, but I didn't see them because I'm a loser irl
anyway, they're leet, but too many people are closed minded about music so most people don't get it <img src="/~stretch/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Yeah APC was great, however one thing I cannot stand about Maynard is that he doesn't allow smoking inside the arena. I wouldn't mind if he was actually on the fucking stage and within 5-10 feet of the crowd, but he's all the way in the back, on a platform atleast 25-30 feet from anyone. Making people throw away full packs of cigs and lighters is nothing but a power trip imo. Another thing that i hated was the fact that everyone and their mother in the seated section (where i was sitting) HAD TO FUCKING STAND UP FOR THE ENTIRE SHOW...considering everyone in APC moves approximately 5 inches total throughout the entire show it's just not necessary. Otherwise, they played a solid set including just about every song off of 13th step which is the only cd i have so word.
spread the volta love
while we are on the topic of good bands I just saw Godspeed You! Black Emperor who are undoubtedly my favorite instrumental band of all time...these guys are fucking amazing. Not only did they play a brilliant hour and a half set...but jesus fucking christ they followed that up with an hour and a half long encore.
i creamed all over myself.
Mogwai owns u all as well.

For my money Id take Burning Brides over the Volta any day of the week. I really liked The Mars Volta's Tremulant EP but I just couldnt get as into their LP release. I just saw Modest Mouse at the House of Blues in Hollywood, decent show but still, nothing compares to the last LA show of the Murder City Devils... R.I.P....=(

lol u dug the Tremulant EP but can't get into the LP? Could it be because they had two of the songs on the lp turned into singles that have gotten radio play? RIP indeed.

I didnt like the album changes, and there was another song that wasnt on the EP that was released prior to the LP that was awesome in its original version. I have no objection to worthy bands getting radio play. I like to see bands I dig succeed, nothing against the Volta, I just didnt like the LP as much as I was expecting too. Still, Id love to see what they do next.

Well, remember I just said that they started off like 2 to 3 songs with about 3 minutes of feedback.
Yes I do play guitar, and yes I know what a jam session is. What they played was not jamming... it was crap feedback that hurt my ears. I never said they weren't talented, I just thought they sucked live. Maybe they read my post and decided to take that feedback part out of thier show. hah.
Anyways, yeah I was disappointed when I saw them, except that their drummer was absolutely insane and one of the best I've ever heard. Too bad the guitarrist was fucking around or whatever and that the Lead singer sounded like (and looked like) Don Dokken.
