after joining was because he declined interviews, SEVERAL times. He didn't want people in the army to know who he was as a civilian and wanted to do what his family did. I think his heritage and family upbringing are very impressive.
If you saw the 15 minute special on TIllman's life on sportscenter (i know, its sportscenter...bare with me) you would see what a good upbringing he had.
He wasn't one of those flashy college Fball stars like Marshall Faulk who parked his beemer wherever the fuck he wanted to on campus, ON CAMPUS, in san diego state because wtf is the school gonna do kick them out?
Pat Tillman just like his brother came to ASU with ACADEMIC scholarships, and WALKED ON, and made their respective sports (football, baseball)
