Just started the hobby, and was wondering if any of you here already own one. I started with a 10 gallon tank, Ive killed 20 dollars worth of Coral, and my clown fish is on its way to death because I think it has "ick" . My Scooter blenny died, and my Cleaner shrimp is rigid as a piece of tempura.
Ive blown about 100 bucks on fish so far, and Ive only had the fucking tank 3 weeks@!!! ( I cycled it for 1 month btw)
So... who else has a salt water tank who might be able to give some advice to a noob?

Salt waters are the hardest to use. Fresh water is the best to start with, even tho I had my share of problems with that.
Since you do have a salt water you need to..
At least once a month...
1. Clean the gravel
2. Change 15-20% of the water every couple weeks (make sure its dechlorinated and mixed before u put it in)
3. Use Marine Max to prevent disease
4. Marine clean to fight algae and keep gravel clean
Thats just a few of the basic things, but theres a lot more to learn if you want it to be successful. I reccomend going to Petsmart/a website with lots of info on the subject and reading up on it.

I had fresh water tank for about 8 years, which imo is 10x better and easier. True, you can't get as good of fish in fresh water in terms of color, but you can get awesome looking african cichlids which have awesome color if you know which kind of fish to buy. Salt water vs. fresh water = You have to clean salt water tanks about once every 2 weeks, with my fresh water tank you only have to gravel vacum about once every 3 months, and water change. Not to mention fresh water fish are about 1/5 of the costs of salt water, although I have no good salt water advice for you, my advice is go fresh water, unless you are really into what you're doing and want to dedicate 1-3 hours every 2 weeks cleaning gravel and adding new salt water, good luck have fun...Note - African cichlids are very very agressive and faught all the time cuz they are hard core territorial, that was great entertainment in itself, throw a gold fish in there, BOOM dead in less then a minute.

well.. i already have a salt water tank, ive invested a few hundreds dollars already so i cant pull out now.
your fish :

my fish

R.I.P
but the live one :

and my shrimp is tight!

and as soon as shit stops dying in my tank, in comes the wrasses!

all the wrasses are like 50 bucks a pop, and until i can take care of my 20 dollar clown fish, i cant buy them =[
however, no fresh water fish can match the colors... boring blue, or psychedelic rainbow! i choose psychedelic rainbow.
