Yeah, my friend had a lot of graphics software and music tracking software on his old Amiga we used to play around with in the early 90's. But as far as tracking goes with renoise, I downloaded it about 3 months ago to try it out, and I kept getting various program errors, and glitches, not to mention the pattern views hurt my eyes after a while of following them.
The only drawback to using Modplug Tracker compared to renoise, is the various sound effects support that can be used in conjuction with notes on a pattern, like Flanger/Phasers for example. Unless I resample the instrument with that effect, I probably wont get much out of the effect.
Renoise's VST plug-ins is a very cool feature. However, I think that any idiot who charges for their VST plug-ins on their site should be casterated, since most VST plugins are usually very simple, and very limited.
Another thing that sucks about renoise, is the fact that it has absolutely no support for .Mod .s3m .xm .It formats, yet they call themselves "mod" software.
Renoise also has very limited midi keyboard support.
Some of it's effects, are more advanced in terms of tracking the effects onto the patterns whereas when you use what I use, the filters are built in, and only customizable in a per channel basis, where I am not able to have complete full control over the filtering effects, unless I may need a special VST plugin to accomplish that.
I think Renoise still has a bit of catching up to do. Now that Modplug Tracker is an open source project, it may also be open to modification, and I'm hoping the open source community will able to make the Modplug Tracker a lot better. I've used every single feature in the tracker, and understand every function, effect, and ability, now that I've used it, I understand it's weaknesses and what it lacks.
If you havn't tried it yet, Modplug Tracker is an excellent way to track music. It has VST plug-ins, as well as the built in ability to sample, and refilter your own samples.
It's also very fast, and compatible with very older systems. It has built-in encoders for MP3 and .Wav. 48khz/16-bit sampling(anything more you need than that is useless.), HF noise reduction, high quality resamp filters.
