If you look at what George Mason , a founding father, wrote which was later used as the basis of our own Bill of Rights, civilian control of the military was absolutely essential.
Yes, civilian control of DoD fits that description since the President cannot do it all himself anymore.
President Truman said it, I am saying it, George Mason said it. Countless other people have said it in the last 200+ years, I think you simply fail to accept it.
