The idea behind the eu is to create an economic unit capable of competing with the US and China. With the social structures, cultures and 32 hour work weeks plus the 6 weeks annual vacations there is no way they can make products and services that can compete in the open market. Without the government subsidy they will fall on their collective asses. Eastern Europe will by far surpass Western in terms of productivity per person and is far more likely to be able to compete internationally on price and quality. Socialism is root cause of evil.

Democracy as a pure form of government will devolve into socialism 100% of the time. That is why we are a Republic. The will of the people is fickle and changes with the wind. De Touqeville called it exactly right. As soon as the masses realize that they can vote themselves anything a democracy will devolve into chaos. Stretch look around at all the people you know. DO you really believe they would be able to pass a small civics test in order to vote? Most couldn't and that is a sad day. When tv ads can actually sway voters on both sides it makes me nervous for our country. There are very few responsible voters and they are in the minorty regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum. So we rely on Congress to pass laws and the Courts to tell us if they stand up to the Constitution not precedent. I want a Court who actually reads the Constitution and believes in its intent rather than one that believes in something else and looks to rationalize it into the Constitution. Unfortunately the courts have for too long done just the opposite.

As far as Lib/ Conserv goes, its all relative. Yeah, our founding fathers were liberal, but they were dealing with the Old World monarchy, and the Idea of a democracy was an extremely liberal view. Todays ultra lib's are pretty close to socialists in my opinion.
