Sure we all played games like Duke Nukem 3d, Warcraft 1/2 and starcraft where you can connect over the modem and enjoy gaming at a new level, but what was everyones FIRST online game playing with multiple people MMO style?
My first game that got me into the online scene was netWAR in 1997 (then uo shortly after, of course).. Dunno if anyone else played it but it was awesome back in the day.. It had online ranking system for k/d to see who was the best, and vehicles like helicopters/tanks. It was a cheezy ass game but 50 people playing at once shooting up each other was awesome.. It introduced me to the online world of games.. I know everyone started playing online before UO, so where was it?

I got to lvl 30 after like 2-3 weeks, was really having fun. Then I went to the elven town, fell off the boat, and saw 5-6 huge sharks. I turned the game off, and never played again.

Moose and I made two trolls call Turds (don't remember the other portion of the name...)
First online game was diablo.

I played Diablo, then quickly moved to UO where I met half of these upstanding gentlemen at their keep. <img src="/~stretch/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I think it was either Max or Colima that told me to head over to the keep
