actually the electric powered ones are still around. I converted 2 cars to electric power in high school. The problem with them is the batteries. Goods quality gel batteries are expensive while the standard lead acid batteries arent very practical.
changes will have to be made incrimentally. itll be gas to hybrid to electric to ethanol to hydrogen or something similar. (Go French Fry mobile! )
The government could make hybrids popular and practical (they are gaining in popularity and reliability regardless) by offering better tax breaks/rebates.
I dont believe its a complete conspiracy on the governments part but I do believe there are certain decision-making people who's lifestyle is due to the oil industry and arent willing to give it up for whatever reason. I guess a cleaner world with a healthier population isnt good enough reason.
