I'd never get a single speed rigid MTB though.........unless you're doing all flats...or downhill(takin' uphill by a car).... They do fall within your price range though.
If you're going to be a barely weekend warrior doing easy-moderate trails... one of those shit Mongoose bikes will be perfectly fine imo... and cheap.
