For under 400$? Uh good luck finding a good bike for under 400$... Go to Walmart or Target and get a fuckin' cheap mongoose if your price range is that low...

Don't get me wrong, this bike is pretty bad, but it's a decent bang for the buck. You could even go cheaper and get a shittier bike. If you want a better investment... you're looking at spending maybe 600+. I'd go to a local bike shop and check out some other options. It all depends if you just plan on doing it casually or if you really want to get into it.

I don't believe for a second there isn't a better quality bike out there for $400 or less.
Give me the names of some good decent bikes that are $600-$1000. I bet I find a deal and can get one for my price range. I just have to know what features to look for. Like actual weight, size, mechanics, etc... Fuck name brands and shit like that.

If you are ok with rigid, and single speed, you can get a Redline Monocog in that price range, and it is a solid bike that you will have zero maintenance issues with, and will last forever.
Do you want mostly cross country? Or do you think that you will get into gravity assisted riding?
Let me know what your riding will be like, and i can give you some better suggestions.

do NOT buy a full suspension bike for under 1000 dollars. stick to hard tail, or rigid, or your bike will start falling apart in the first season.

I ride a redline r760. I'm a road biker first and foremost...
I'd never get a single speed rigid MTB though.........unless you're doing all flats...or downhill(takin' uphill by a car).... They do fall within your price range though.
If you're going to be a barely weekend warrior doing easy-moderate trails... one of those shit Mongoose bikes will be perfectly fine imo... and cheap.

plex, for MTB, single speed is diffferent than for road, in fact, once you are used to it, you will DOMINATE on the uphills. Your bike will be lighter, and you wont make any mistakes picking the wrong gear, or skipping. you will be very slow on the flats, and i would not recommend it at all for that purpose. As for rigid, I only recommend it from a money saving, i can buy a suspension fork later standpoint. You can afford to get better components for now, and if you are really into it, upgrade later. I wouldn't ride a walmart bike on anything but a paved trail. If you want to go cheap, get a GT or Ironhorse hardtail from your local performance bike shop.
Just for reference, here is my MTB, not rigid, or single speed, but also quite a bit out of rain's current price range and not my first bike.
