Ya, I can spend my money better than the government can. But that doesn't mean I can pay for bridges to be built or roads. It doesn't mean I can pay for the police or firefighters. Hell, I don't think I can even pay for schooling in a fair way.
That is what I mean, by investing in our country. My point is that I don't care how much money we are spending or how much in relation to our GDP. What I care about is that we are spending over 65% of our discretionary spending (based on the wiki article you linked) on the war on terror, the defense department and homeland security. Whereas we only spend 13% on the department of transportation. That to me is the fucked up part.
We spend all this money on shit to "protect us" but fuck, what is there going to be to protect in 20 years? If we don't start spending money on this country there won't be anything left. And I don't mean bailing out AIG or GM. I mean education and roads.
The percentages that you read are the increased amount from the previous year. It's in the description...I can't see how you're getting more than 20-30%. I think defense is the most important responsibility our federal government has.
Why is it you think you can't pay for a road? It's called a toll road. Police and firefighters are all paid for locally. With the exception of equipment they obtain through homeland security budgets. Which is BS in the first place. How do you think more money will help with education? I went to a lower and a mid-upper income school. The main difference was the students, not the teachers.
The government doesn't HAVE to take care of these things for you. We just let them do it. Our government is completely out of control.
I'd be thrilled if the budget was cut in half.
