you don't have to, steampowered.com you can download the app and use it like xfire, except that it's 1,000 times less gay. you can add non-steam games to it, and shift+tab in-game that you add - to access msging your friends etc. so you don't have to alt tab. kinda beneficial even if you don't have any valve prods.
