i agree. with just building a desktop. last year i put this together.
AMD 4800+ 2.5ghz
4gig ram ddr2 800
450 power supply
ECS amd 770 AM2+ mobo.
xp 32bit home. (i was broke had to go as cheap as posisble)
all for just over 400 after mail in rebates. i still use the 8800gts 640mb i bought 2 years ago. but with todays gear you could do better for the same amount,

i was thinking of getting a netbook. any suggestions?

Yah. I love the Eee 900 series, or the Aspire One. Cheaper, but better than the rest.. the bonus on the Aspire is that the keyboard is choice.
They all have the same equipment, so really look at battery life and bottom line price, just the trick is that Dell, HP etc. are over priced.. they're not better.
