For me it's much more simple than all that - if it looks fun, and other people I enjoy playing with are playing it, then I'll try it, just like I did DayZ. If I was buying a house or a car, I would do enough research to write a couple pages of reasons why I should or should not buy said item. However, spending $20 to try a new game is worth it to me, even if I'm bored of it or arrive at the same conclusions you did, but 2 months later after trying it myself.
Bottom line for me is that DayZ in its current state is too frustrating for ME. I could see myself loving a version of it that was more secure and less buggy, and I hope the standalone is just that.
