I have also partaken in countless surgeries at 2am because people that easily obtain these weapons shot each other, shot children in passing cars ( with assault rifles ) and killed numerous bystanders with modified assault rifles that they purchased for next to nothing at gun shows.
Have you ever seen a 3 year old come into the OR with a bullet in his spine because we are so rabid to protect our right to bear arms that they're easier to buy than pot?
How often does this happen where you live? I rarely ever hear stories about people accidentally discharging assault rifles and shooting other people.
I'd wager a fair amount of money that nationally, the majority of gunshot wounds that come from assault rifles are due to criminal activities involving guns that are not purchased legally. The type of person that is likely to use an assault rifle to shoot people is a criminal, and felons can't own guns period, let alone assault rifles.
This brings me to my next point, which is this. People who are planning to use assault rifles for criminal activities are not going to be deterred from buying one just because they are illegal. Ever watch the first 48? You think those 16, 17 and 18 year old kids with long criminal records are purchasing those guns legally? No...they are not. What this translates into is that responsible people, like me, will not be able to purchase weapons of the equivalent destructive power as those who would use them against me illegally. I'm being put at a disadvantage.
1. already said the same thing but you didn't read the thread so you don't know that.
2. because if they don't it just erodes the freedoms America was founded on.
3. nobody said shit about boarder security until you did, America isn't Australia and that will not work because of the high request for those weapons here.
4. Yes
5. No, but then you just look like a opinionated douche with no first hand experience other than handing surgeons their instruments while in surgery.
6. you failed.
7. 2% of all homicides involve so-called "assault rifles"
First off thank you Zelik for that. And Im not saying that everyone should wave ak's in the air and use assault rifles for every home invasion or situation that comes up. They should have that option if something happens though. I would prefer to use an AR15 cause I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps Infantry training with them and using that training in Iraq. Like I said before, for me there is no better weapon on earth if you know how to use it. I guess Im not understanding your end game. If you want to ban guns to stop deaths, then we should ban all things that cause it IE alcohol and tobacco. For me its the major issue is what Vermi said. The government is slowly chipping away at our rights. And banning certain guns wont change anything other than the government having more control over our daily lives.
Verm - I appreciate your post. I agree that we could go down that road as a country, but I feel like the chances of that happening are so small that to have heavy weapons so easily available to the general population is not a sensible precaution. I would personally GTFO if I had any solid evidence that we were going to shit the bed and go into a civil war ( there would be a great deal of events leading up to it ), and frankly I feel like we're only making it easy for people that actually want one to arm themselves for one. I understand that not everyone can afford to leave town, but that's an unfortunate result of poor life decisions for *most* people, barring the sick and elderly. There has to be a way to head in a direction where it's incredibly expensive or difficult for anyone to have these items that hasn't gone thru an array of background checks and/or recieved law enforcement or military training. In China weapons are incredibly expensive and you face SERIOUS time for getting caught for one if it doesn't involve youyr career, and subsequently they have a drastically lower incidence of these types of events. I do not think that this is a coincidence, and neither do a great deal of people on both sides of the debate. This incident has caused a ton of people to look at other countries and see the contrasts. We are not perfect, and it would do us well to learn from others sometimes just like in our day to day lives. We can't just give up and all it a moot point because there are already so many weapons out there. That's defeatist thinking and I don't buy it.
Actually G-Fist I was a real nurse so I did far more than pass instruments, but your ignorance is so glaring at this point that I don't expect you to know that. It's typical for someone that gets shitfaced on a regular basis and goes apeshit in mumble. That behavior shows such a low level of class that it scares me to think that we actually send people that behave the way you do socially overseas to represent us. I did read your posts and commented on them, but you were so furious and hammering away with "you mads" and other low level shit you picked up online that you completely skipped them.

It happens a fair amount. I live in West Palm so we have Top 6 here and a few other notorious gangs. I actually saw a show on the History Channel the other day about West Palm, and they referred to it as a "deadly killing zone". Gangs open fire on police cars on a regular basis, and one of them has an initiation where you open fire on someone random in public. I never said that any of these ideas could "stop" it, but there have to be a variety of things we can bunch into one that can at least cut down on this. It's like having a car alarm, they'll still break in if they really want it, but you will also deter a lot of people. Up in Wellington they have gun shows on a regular basis. The guns are purchased "legally" and then resold to the kids that use them for other reasons. So essentially they're being bought legally.
