How much further do the books go, btw? Where are we in the books rather, and how many more are there?

We are in book 3 right now. Book 3 had a TON of shit happen, so book 3 was split up into two seasons, seasons 3 and 4. Season 4 will finish out book 3. Dunno if they will end the season by overlapping into book 4 or not.

Martin has written books 4 and 5, and we expect book 6 out some time next year, maybe. The dude went 6 years between book 4 and 5 and book 5 came out in 2011. So it could be even longer than next year.

My hopes are in HBO, apparently Martin told them how the story is supposed to go on just in case something happens to him, or for anyone with a clue - because he's a super slow writer and everyobdy knows the movie will surpass the books in couple years.
Even if book 6 goes out next year the movie will still finish way before book 7. Unles they stretch it, which is kinda good and bad at the same time, depends on the view point.

Yea I've been curious about this myself because as you said, the show will overtake the progress of the books in no time.

Yeah movie bussines is nothing like letting a slow writer take his time to finish a book. The movie producers know each main characters story line ending and such. They were considering a couple years of no series at some later point but decided against it, because the popularity would drop(yeah right....) and the young actors would age up, though we all know it's about the money.
