Varys wasn't aboard the boat in the books, but since his actual location was unknown until, um.. that thing happened, it makes sense to have him tag along with Tyrion in season 5.
If season 5 follows the books, then I fear for this show and the backlash that will ensue. No one in the history of man has ever uttered the words "I think I'll read Feast for Crows again".
