As far as I know, there's been no confirmation that the police were shot at. They say they were, but I have yet to see video of this. If you know of any, please link it. There's been reports of shots fired, allegedly in the direction of the police. There's also other witnesses that say that's bullshit. With thousands of people out there who all have video recorders on their phones (not to mention all the press), you'd think there would be video of police being fired upon if it happened.

But I digress. The rioting/looting etc definitely calls for swift action and I think a strong display of force in that situation is okay. Further, I think people who are caught doing that should have minimum mandatory sentences. Their opportunist scumbags who are too short sited to see that they are destroying what their community is trying to achieve through peaceful demonstration.

I agree with you. There are situations where law enforcement would need that type of gear. The LA bank robbery shootout from the 90's comes to mind where the dudes were geared in body armor head to toe and rocking drum clips with fully automatic assault rifles. I think we're actually on the same page. I agree, when rioting/looting starts, the police need superior tools to do their job. I think showing up with that shit out of the gate and MOST ESPECIALLY aiming their fucking muzzles at unarmed demonstrators is completely un-fucking called for.

Video doesn't prove much really. Shots were fired but there's no way to tell at who and by who. I read that civilians have been shot (by other civilians). Not surprising really. It's the fucking ghetto. Could be existing rivalries played out in the streets. Could be looters fighting over loot. Who the fuck knows?

And I think at that point the police say it's not us shooting, so fuck it we're going full battle rattle because we want the highest chance at surviving the night. I can't say I fault them that, even if it's one douchebag shooting a .22 into the sky.

I'm with you there. Once shots are fired, they have every right to use the tools at their disposal to protect their lives and the lives of the innocent. Mainly, my biggest issue is they rolled all this shit out ahead of time and I think the air of intimidation they created out the gate was a large contributing factor to things escalating the way they have.

Yep I agree. Since this is not a third world country war zone and instead dealing with American citizens (however fucked up I think they truly are), police need to apply the maximum amount of discretion in their use of force.
Peaceful demonstration? Out there in blues and make sure people are doing everything legal.
Demonstration getting a rowdy? Strap on the riot gear.
Shots fired, vandalism, fires, etc? Roll out the big guns, disperse the crowd.

Seems logical/common sense to me, but...

My view is that this is a legitimate revolt and it can easily be stopped with acts of fairness and justice. Shooting more or more repression would worsen the popular anger.

I am very hopeful that some wiser police and leaders are doing what is needed, with the people, to stop the rage and fix/heal issues.
