Dhal pretty much nailed it. Only thing I could add is The Tonight Show has always been a show geared more towards a family audience. I remember watching it with my grandparents when I was a kid when Johnny Carson was the host. It's never going to be as edgy as some other shows because it's not geared for that type of audience. It's supposed to be fun the whole family can enjoy.
