If Sony is willing to bail on the $40m price tag (plus marketting costs) they spent making the movie, they should just release it online. Let the world-wide public download and view it.

It would be good for you since nobody will bomb canada anyway, but the rest of the world has a right to be afraid.

The only thing North Korea can bomb is South Korea, and if all their best scientists pulled a few all nighters, maybe the west coast of Japan.

They're relegated to shit like pestering Japanese media conglomerates and kidnapping South Korean movie directors because when they get too rowdy they get slapped with sanctions.

To be fair, no one would have believed they would be capable of this kind of cyber attack, especially when you consider the vast majority of the country are unaware the internet exists and those who do know about it have never seen it.

I'm betting it's going to come out that China was involved in this, at least as an enabler. If China is involved, those threats have a much greater ring to them.

North Korea has its own internal internet service. The regular internet is only available through official channels. They have a hacking curriculum at their two major universities, and it wouldn't surprise anyone if they were learning from the Chinese hacking community. It's very unlikely that this is endorsed by the Chinese government however, since they don't like that North Korean regime any more than we do. They want to keep it alive and dormant, not stirring up shit with the west.

Chances are it's just the DPRK trying to pull a "me too" after seeing how effective China is at challenging more conventionally powerful countries through hacking. The difference is China uses hackers mostly for industrial espionage, while North Korea mostly uses it for petty crime to fund the regime.

It apparently didn't occur to them that China is so successful in its hacking campaigns because it can plausibly deny that the government had anything to do with the hacking. Since the DPRK controls all access to the wider internet, any action you can tie to North Korea, is automatically tied to its government.

That's not correct. China has already assisted North Korea in numerous hacks. They have been known for providing proprietary software to North Korea, as well as China training Koreans on advanced blackhat techniques. This is well documented in the security industry.

Here is an article from 2013 talking about it:
http://www.voanews.com/content/north-koreas-world-class-cyber-attacks-coming-from-china/1795349.html

There are a lot more articles you can find if you tell google to ignore any news from December 2014, and type in "China Helps NK Hack". If you don't ignore news from December 2014 you will only find articles relating to an anonymous government employee who is working on the Sony hacks saying that China was involved.

The biggest story that all the news outlets and even Obama has gotten wrong so far is that Sony didnt decide to pull the movie. The chickenshit distributors did. Regal Entertainment, AMC Entertainment, Cinemark, Carmike Cinemas and Cineplex Entertainment all refused to play the movie. When the top 5 theater chains wont show your movie, you dont release it that way.
