To me it seems like a matter of risk. Risk of a vaccine harming your kid vs. risk of them contracting a disease. To me it seems like a no-brainer.
You accept certain levels of risk for your kids with every decision you make. There's a far greater statistical chance that your kids will die in a car crash with you every time you get behind the wheel of your car with them in it than they will get sick from vaccine. Every time you board a plane, you run the risk of dying in a plane crash. But the statistical probability of that happening is so low that you fly anyway because it's worth the minute risk for the convenience of travelling great distances in a short period of time.
I think of vaccines the same way. Sadly, there is no reliable way to track actual vaccine related illness. There's a really dumb database called VAERS that purports to track severe vaccine reactions. Problem with VAERS is that it's the wikipedia of data collection. Literally anyone can enter a case in there with no medical evidence to support their claim. If you believe the anti-vaccine crowd, there have been about 100 deaths related to the measles vaccine in the last 10 years. Compare that to auto accident fatalities or even plane crash fatalities and you can quickly draw the conclusion that statistically speaking, the MMR vaccine carries less risk of death than flying or riding in a car and that's if you believe that every single one of those death actually did come from the MMR vaccine, which is a pretty big logical leap of faith.
So to me, the risk of death is so low I see no reason not to vaccinate my kid and spare him the possibility of a preventable disease.
With respect to vaccine related illness, I just tap out and say fine, you guys do whatever you want, I am going to go with science and doctors. There's no reliable way to track vaccine related illness and there have not been any studies done which can clearly show that vaccines cause any illnesses. The scientists have tried and tried to do studies that show a link between autism and vaccines and they keep coming up empty.
For me, all I see is a recurring theme whereby the anti-vax crowd makes ridiculous claims, those claims are refuted with scientific fact, and they then claim that the source of the facts is just a "hack" and is in with "big pharma" to make money. So in their world, all researchers and doctors are nothing more than pawns or players in some giant game to take your money and make your kids sick. Go get your tinfoil hats kids!
